Moped and Motorcycle Crime

The theft of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds is a problem in Warwickshire, and a major problem in many parts of the country, especially in urban areas. When stolen the vehicles are either broken up for the value of their parts or alternatively are used in further crimes, such as snatch theft of personal property or robbery. This secondary use is causing a rise in crime.

It is relatively easy to protect a vehicle from theft and Metropolitan Police have put together a guide to outline the simple measures that can be taken to do this. A list of suitable security tested products will also be given, along with the differences in how they are certified.

Always check your insurance to see if your insurer expects a minimum level of security to cover the value of your vehicle. Throughout this guide, the term powered two wheeler will be sometimes used to describe all motorcycles, scooters and mopeds, irrespective of their differing engine capacities.

Crime prevention measures:

Most crime is opportunistic, and vehicle crime is no exception. Although there may be certain types of powered two wheeler that are sought by thieves, either for the intrinsic value of their parts or for their suitability in committing further crimes, the opportunity to steal such a vehicle will always be key. To reduce the opportunity for theft means taking simple measures that build up layers of security, resulting in making the vehicle less desirable to a thief owing to the effort required to steal it. At least two points of locking are advisable, ensuring both wheels are secured.

How to secure your vehicle:
When at home, keep your vehicle in a garage, shed or bike storage unit;
Consider installing a ground anchor in your garage or driveway to secure the vehicle;
Secure the rear wheel of the vehicle with a security tested chain and padlock set. Attach the chain either to a ground anchor or another fixed immovable object;
Once secure, wrap any excess chain and the lock around the rear wheel. This prevents the lock being targeted if left loose on the ground;
Use a disc lock on the front wheel;
Fit a grip lock to the throttle;
Use a movement sensor alarm;
Bike covers are another good obstacle to a thief, and prevent immediate access to the controls and security features;
Fit a tracking device to assist in recovering your vehicle if stolen – ensure it is hidden so thieves cannot easily remove it;
Consider property marking any panels. Property marking is available in various forms, from forensic marking to etching. Register this on a database;
Use tamper proof – one way screws – reinforced by adhesive to prevent number plate theft;
When out and about, consider parking your vehicle in a Park Mark approved car park, which has passed a security assessment. Secure your vehicle to any ground anchor or support stand provided;
Alternatively, park your vehicle in an area that is well overlooked with good lighting.
